Herbert's Hide-A-Way
The Killer: Herbert Richard Baumeister (April 7, 1947-July 3, 1996) was an American businessman and serial killer suspected of murdering young men during the 1980s and 1990s. Indianapolis police became suspicious of Baumeister when a witness claimed that a man calling himself "Brian Smart" picked him up at a gay bar, took him to a secluded mansion, and tried to strangle him in the indoor swimming pool room. The authorities identified "Brian Smart" as Herb Baumeister and carried out a search of Fox Hollow Farm, the 18-acre estate Baumeister had purchased in 1988. The search turned up the remains of 10 men that have since then been identified. Baumeister received the nickname "The I-70 Strangler" for dumping his earlier victims along Interstate 70; a practice that ended when Baumeister purchased Fox Hollow Farm and was able to bury his victims in the wooded area behind his house.
